Screenprint Biennial 2018 Symposium

November 3, 2018 @ 8:30 am - 3:30 pm

In conjunction with the Screenprint Biennial 2018 exhibition, Opalka Gallery is hosting a one-day Symposium on Saturday, November 3, 2018, with a printmaker’s round table, keynote address by Luther Davis, open portfolio, jurors’ tour, and visit to a regional print collection.

8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Breakfast and Jurors’ Tour

The Symposium kicks-off with donuts and coffee in the gallery as Screenprint Biennial founder and juror Nathan Meltz, joined by juror Travis Janssen, lead guests through the exhibition. They will give insights into the exhibition’s selection process, as well as help place the work in critical context. They will share details about the artists and will offer technical explanations based on their experience as printmakers.

9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Printmaker’s Round Table

The Printmaker’s Round Table will present a discussion among nationally-recognized screenprint artists Terry James Conrad and Travis Janssen, along with biennial artists Dadisi Curtis, Amy Cousins, Tonja Torgerson, Sheila Goloborotko, and Tatiana Potts as they address contemporary issues in print-based art practices. Should screenprints be political? Why don’t rock posters get respect? What’s so democratic about screenprinting? These questions and more will guide a lively discussion and Q&A moderated by biennial founder, Nathan Meltz.

10:45 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
Keynote Address: Luther Davis

We are excited to present a keynote address from Master Printer Luther Davis, co-founder of Forth Estate, a fine art publisher focused on producing limited editions with emerging artists. Luther teaches printmaking at Parsons School of Design and The Cooper Union, and was the Director and Master Printer of Axelle Editions from 1999-2016, a fine art print atelier specializing in screenprinting. He is currently the Director and Master Printer for BRT Printshop in Red Hook, Brooklyn.

12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Lunch and Open Portfolio

Dozens of artists will be set up to display and sell their screenprinted rock posters, fine art prints, brochures, zines, risograph prints, graphic design samples, and more. Any and all printed matter and graphic arts are welcome. The open portfolio is a democratic event in which students present side-by-side with nationally-recognized graphic artists and graphic art faculty. The open portfolio is free and open to the public,

Participation in the open portfolio is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please contact Amy Griffin at [email protected] to reserve your spot.

2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Optional Regroup at the Tang Museum Print Collection

After lunch, we will regroup at the Tang Museum on the campus of Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs to view their print collection, which is not open to the public without special appointment, with Tang Registrar, Jessica Lubniewski. The Tang is a repository for a large number of editions created by radical screenprinting nun, Sister Corita Kent. The visit will highlight Kent’s prints as well as feature some of her hand-made matrices that became the foundation of the prints themselves. Note: Transportation is not provided. Carpooling is encouraged.

Tickets include admission, donuts and coffee, and lunch: $20 in advance, $25 day of event, $10 for students with valid ID.
